Woman running through a competency-based interview with a candidate

Competency-Based Interviews Explained – Part of HR Glossary Series

When a role is advertised, it will come with an expectation of skills, knowledge, experience and where applicable, qualifications that are required. Some of these will be viewed as essential, and some as desirable.

The job description acts as a summary of what to expect when you are in the role, what the main responsibilities are, and what the tasks will be. From those, interview questions are created to reflect the experience, prior knowledge and skills that match what is needed to be successful in the role.

Interview questions are competency-based because they are designed to identify what your mindset and skills you can bring to the role, the organisation, how you manage resolving situations, and what puts you above the other candidates.

To prepare for a competency-based interview, make sure you understand the job description, the skills required to perform in that role and then think of what you have achieved and acquired, to match these requirements. Prepare as many examples as possible. This is your opportunity to highlight what you’ve achieved – don’t be shy!
