Not every employer offers apprenticeships and what’s on offer in your area can be found on the Gov.uk website.
Where an organisation offers apprenticeships, they will advertise them and interview candidates. Make sure you understand what the job is before you apply, and that you meet the age criteria for the scheme.
When you are offered an apprenticeship, your employer will register you with a college and on the Government apprenticeship portal. Everything is online now and you will be asked to complete your onboarding that way to complete the registration process.
Apprenticeships usually last four years and each year involves passing skills tests in the job, and passing exams at college. It also involves logging every aspect of job learning on the college training portal, attending college one day each week and working the other four days.
You will need to plan, organise, log and complete tasks and it is online-based; some knowledge of computers and having one to work from at home are essential for you to keep up with the work involved.
The Government reviews the minimum hourly pay rate for apprentices every April. Until end of March 2024, it is £5.28 per hour but rules apply depending on your age. If your working day is 8 hours, that would be £42.24 per day. Your rate of pay should be reviewed regularly to ensure it meets the correct rate.
